Dr. Edward Ducharme, my beloved uncle, holds a double PhD in English and education and a law degree. But considering that laughter is indeed medicine, let’s make that a triple-doctorate. As a humourist, my uncle is a true master. It usually only takes him but a few short minutes to have me in tears, and at the end of an hour, I’ve had an envigorating abdominal workout. Days later, I am still giggling at his antics and my ribs still hurt with good pain.
Edward has inspired me countless times and in more ways than he knows. Notably, he continues to inspire daily me as a thinker and as a linguist. Edward is a relentless searcher of the truth, and he would be willing to search through a mountain of dictionaries, if it were necessary, just to find the best word to convey his message. But he usually has the right word on the tip of his tongue. He is quick and witty, charming and sarcastic, in the DuCharme style, but Ed does it better than the rest of us.
I especially want to thank my Uncle Ed for inspiring me to write. My upcoming book, Get Wiggly, would not be possible without his advice. And this very Web site would probably hold a fraction of its present content had my uncle not single-handedly tumbled my writer’s block.
Edward entered law in his mid-40s and is now a judge of the highest court in the province: The Ontario Court of Appeal. An appellate judge is required on a daily basis to write decisions that are meaningful, understandable and effective. On the bench, his tremendous analytical capabilities and superb writing skills are well-utilized.
“When I was doing my doctoral work, I became interested in a theoretical problem: Where is the meaning of a text? … Is it found in the words on the printed page? Or is it found in the intention of the author? Or is it found in the mind of the reader?… I never intended to practice law… I meant only to inquire about that issue: Where is the meaning of a legal text?”
“I said to my mother, ‘What do you think of the idea of me studying law?’”… “And she sat right up in her bed and she said, ‘That’s a fabulous idea! Promise me you’ll practice with your brother.’”
“Trust thyself. Accept the place the divine providence has found for you.”

Alzeimer’s – a kind of diabetes of the brain, where brain cells die because they can no longer take in glucose. Consuming coconut oil (a medium chain fatty acid) provides an alternative fuel that may revive brain cells to greatly improve the condition of the patient.
Cancer is the disease characterized by abnormal, uncontrolled growth and division of cells, which can create tumours that severely block the functioning of healthy cells. Unfortunately, it often takes 20 years or more for a tumour or other symptoms to show up in a medical screening. Everyone has some cancer cells in their body. Normal, healthy cells grow and divide at a normal rate, and they are pre-programmed to die so to make room for newer, growing healthy cells. If a cell’s DNA becomes corrupt, the immune system should kill it before it can block the functions of healthy cells. Cancer is caused by environment. The healthy cell that finds itself in an unhealthy surrounding attempts to “adapt” to the unhealthy environmental conditions in an effort to survive.
Cancer’s 3 main causes are: toxins, acid, and low oxygen. (toxins in the air, drinking water and in food and “medicine”, acid produced by stress and mass-produced “food” and lower levels of oxygen, due to an acidic diet and shallow breathing. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1931 for his discovery that cancer thrives in anaerobic (without oxygen), or acidic, conditions. CANCER CANNOT LIVE IN AN ALKALINE BODY (pH 7.36). The higher the pH, the higher the concentration of oxygen molecules.
Preventing cancer is better than curing it. Every cell (including cancer cells) have a cannabinoid receptor that waits for a cannabinoid from the cannabis plant. If the cell is cancerous, it either becomes noncancerous or dies. Other plants such as dandelion tend to work synergistically to defend the body against acidity, low oxygen, toxins and stress. Some of the best-known and most highly-recommended herbs for fighting cancer are: aloe, cayenne pepper, ginger, curcumin, garlic and basil.
Other ways to prevent cancer and improve your health:
Breathe slowly and deeply. Remind yourself to do this by placing a letter “B” around your home and office.
Drink the cleanest, fluoride-free water possible, and choose organic vegetables and fruits, while avoiding grains, sugars and processed foods as much as possible.
Use natural healing herbs together for their synergistic effects. If the use of cannabis is illegal in your jurisdiction, please write to your lawmakers, and demand that they make this important herb available to everyone. Many jurisdictions allow the medicinal use of cannabis for treating the symptoms of cancer, but healthy people should be pro-active in eliminating cancer cells before a tumour can form.
Since stressful situations will inevitable arise, learn to observe these situations without accumulating the tension inside you. If stress does accumulate in you, it is important to utilize a stress-elimination technique, such as the healing system that I developed, as often as needed (if the technique is done correctly, most people only need one session per year).
Candida is a kind of yeast, whose overgrowth may be at the cause of some common health problems including fatigue, headache, and skin problems, but more studies are needed to provide the evidence that the symptoms are in fact caused by an imbalance in the intestines.
According to Dr. Tullio Simoncini of Rome, Italy, the candida albicans fungus is always present in cancer patients. He further states that cancer is a direct product of the candida fungus, and therefore the most effective way to eliminate cancer would be to eliminate candida. His method involves alkalization with baking soda.
Celiac diseases – a reaction to eating gluten, found in all grains, damaging the lining of the small intestine thereby preventing the absorption of vital nutrients.
Cold (the common cold, AKA nasopharyngitis, rhinopharyngitis) – is caused by a viral infection. Remember that antibiotics do not work on viruses. Concentrated oregano oil is a potent natural remedy that seems to work very quickly to eliminate the cold virus.
DiabetesMellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes is where the cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced (this is known as insulin resistance). High blood sugar is dangerous. Minor symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst and increased hunger. Major consequences include diabetic ketoacidosis and nonketotic hyperosmolar coma. Serious long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure, and retinal damage. Traditional medical treatment includes insulin injections, while natural doctors recommend correcting the diet and lifestyle factors such as smoking cessation and exercise.
Influenza – the flu – similar to the common cold but with fever, the flu is also caused by a viral infection. Antibiotics are therefore useless. Concentrated oregano oil is a potent natural remedy that seems to work very quickly to eliminate the flu virus.
Insomnia – the inability to fall asleep or to stay sleeping. In most cases, mental stress is the primary cause. Patients normally confirm that while trying to sleep, the brain constantly chatters on about an endless stream of things to do, financial problems and the like. Insomnia upsets the natural balance between body, mind and spirit. During the day, the body and mind are in “control”. But at night, while the body and mind lay in bed, it is the spirit’s turn to take over. Unless the patient is unable to sleep, in which case the body and mind refuse to surrender. This can lead to depression and other serious problems.
Obesity
Having an excessive amount of body fat. A person is considered obese if he or she has a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater.
Osteoarthritis
Also called “degenerative arthritis” mostly affecting middle-aged and elderly men and women. In some, osteoarthritis may affect the spine’s facet joints, making it extremely painful to bend or twist. Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage to break down and away from the joints. Stripped of their protective material, the joints begin rubbing against each other, causing pain and impeding movement. This action further irritates the surrounding nerves. Advanced forms of spinal osteoarthritis lead to disc collapse and other problems.
Osteoporosis
A disease characterized by the loss of bone density, resulting in brittleness; most commonly affecting the spinal vertebrae, wrists and hips.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
An inflammatory disease that affects the facet joints in the spine as well as other joints in the body including the hands, elbows, shoulders, fingers and toes.
SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder, a type of depression common in northern climates where the cold weather leads to a deficiency of sunlight. A tropical vacation is the surest way to beat the winter blues, but if that isn’t possible, many have experienced relief using full-spectrum lights, which attempt to mimic the function of the sun in providing a wider spectrum of lights as compared to the standard “yellowish” incandescent bulbs or the “blueish” fluorescent bulbs.
Toxemia – the most common disease in the world. We eat, drink and breathe toxins. The kidneys cannot eliminate them all. The excess passes from the blood to every other organ, and the buildup causes most of the diseases one may encounter in a lifetime.
More diseases to be added to this section soon…
Tuleina is the ancient system of natural medicine of the Kuna tribe. It is administered by ‘neles’ or kuna doctors that are born with the special ability to match physical, mental and spiritual illness with nature’s medicine, herbs from the jungle. In the kuna tribe, these seers are usually women, and they work closely with their husbands to offer their healing service to their fellow tribe members and to visitors from all over.
I was informed by my Panamanian doctor friends that the kunas possess a miraculous substance called tuleina, which allows their women to enjoy painless childbirth. My friends also informed me that although many Panamanian doctors have witnessed these drug-free painless births on many occasions, so far the recipe has been a secret held only by the neles.
In 2003, I became friends with Nele Lopez (pictured left) and her loyal husband, Laurencio. This couple lives in a ghetto outside Panama City called Loma Coba, which belongs to the city of Arraijan. In light of the information that I received with regards to the secrecy of the kuna medicine system, I was careful not to ask them for their coveted formulas. I learned the reason for their reluctance to disclose this vital information: to prevent pharmaceutical giants from bastardizing ‘God’s medicine’ by creating a synthetic version of the real thing, which is then withheld from the poor people of the world.
For more than a decade, Nele and Laurencio and I have gone on healing missions together. We’ve delved into jungles together and filled my SUV with healing plants that they would later distribute amongst their patients. Over the years they also witnessed my willingness to treat the poorest Panamanians free of charge, if they suffered from one of the conditions that can be helped using the healing system that I created. Eventually, Nele and Laurencio decided to entrust me with their healing formulas, such that they may be preserved and made available to those in need.
Nele knows an infinite number of plants, many of which even she does not have a name for, so the process for collecting, photographing, naming and sharing this information will be lengthy. Following are just a few plants that we collected from The Lotus Garden in Limon, Panama. Among the following are bona fide cures for conditions ranging from diabetes to erectile dysfunction. According to Laurencio and other elder Kuna men that I’ve met, the Kuna’s natural alternative to Viagra is much, much better than the little blue pill, which only produces a mechanical erection temporarily. Tuleina actually cures the underlying problem, allowing men to perform sexually well into their seventies, with no need for the crutch of constant pill-popping.
A glossary of dangerous substances that can harm your body and your mind.
Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, reduces levels of protective antioxidant Glutathione. According to Hinson and others in the Laboratory of Chemical Pharmacology, when taking smaller doses of acetaminophen, glutathione detoxifies the acetamenophen thus keeping you alive. But with higher doses of acetamenophen, there is not enough glutathione to protect you. According to Dr. Parris M. Kidd in her article entitled Glutathione: Systemic Protectant AgainstOxidative and Free Radical Damage, depletion of Glutathione leads to cell death.
Acetone, found in cigarette smoke, car exhaust, household cleaners and industrial emissions.
Aflatoxin, found in moldy nuts.
Alcohol, a poison that brings down the central nervous system, depletes protective glutathione leads to liver disease.
Aluminum, found in anti-perspirants, cookware, antacids, cosmetics and some processed food.
Aromatic hydrocarbons, found in fuel and solvents.
Arsenic, found in cigarette smoke.
Asbestos, a carcinogen previously used as a building material. If the fine particles are accidentally inhaled, these stay in the lungs causing lung cancer.
Aspartame, an excitotoxin found in many processed foods, especially those marked ‘sugar free’. It has been linked with brain diseases such as alzeimer’s and parkinson’s disease.
Benzene, found in cigarette Smoke and household cleaners.
Cadmium, found in batteries, insecticides and plastics.
Car exhaust, which contains carbon monoxide, benzene, and formaldehyde.
Chlorine, found in swimming pools and tap water. When showering or bathing in chlorinated water, the chlorine is absorbed by the skin.
Cigarette Smoke, which contains acetone, arsenic, benzene, hydrogen cyanide and many more harmful compounds.
Dioxin, a carcinogen.
Excitotoxins, common food additives that over-stimulate the brain.
Fluorine/Fluoride, a neurotoxin found in toothpaste and tap water. When showering in fluorinated water, the fluorine is absorbed by the skin. Fluoride is not needed to prevent cavities.
In the following video, Professor Paul Connett tells the disturbing history of water fluoridation.
Formaldehyde, a preservative, used in paints, toners, building materials such as plywood.
Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, an excitotoxin found in many processed foods.
Lead, found in paint, dust, soil, water, and old pipes.
Mercury, a heavy metal and a neurotoxin, often used in dental fillings, vaccines, pesticides, smoke from coal plants and trash incinerators. Sadly, this deadly toxin has entered the world’s fresh and salt water, and therefore there is some risk with eating the fish that swim in these waters.
Mono-Sodium Glutamate or MSG, an excitotoxin and a common flavour-enhancer added to many supermarket foods and frequently found in chinese food.
Nitrosamines, found in smoked and cured foods, and processed meat like hot dogs and bologna.
Perchloro-ethane, used in dry cleaning.
Perfluorinated Chemicals or PFC’s, found in non-stick cookware and non-stain carpets.
Pesticides and Herbicides, which directly contaminate those that eat non-organic fruits and vegetables, but also contaminates the air.
Saccharin, an excitotoxin found in many processed foods.
Volatile Organic Compounds or VOC’s, found in cleaning products, paints, strippers and adhesives.
Protect yourself and your family
CUT DEADLY HABITS
Quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.
Avoid alcohol.
YOUR FOOD, MEDICINE AND COSMETICS
Consume organic vegetables and fruit whenever possible.
Avoid Aspartame, Splenda, Nutrasweet, and other artificial sweeteners. Use stevia instead.
Avoid all processed foods.
In restaurants, ask the staff to avoid MSG.
Prefer fresh, raw, steamed or boiled food over barbecued or charred food, and avoid smoked or cured meats.
Instead of antacids that contain aluminum, use baking soda instead or simply alkalize your body naturally by eating more vegetables, and consuming the right fruits.
Use milk of magnesia instead of anti-perspirant.
Prefer filtered tap water over bottled water, since the plastic bottle can leach dangerous toxins into your system.
Limit your fish consumption and avoid the fatty part, which accumulated mercury and other toxins
Ensure any vaccinations you or your children receive do not contain thimerosal, which contains mercury.
Avoid cosmetics containing aluminum, parabens or phthalates.
IN YOUR HOME
Install a good air purifier and a good water filter.
Change heating and A/C filters often.
Dust and vacuum your home regularly, and change the vacuum filter frequently.
If your tap water contains fluorine or chlorine, take shorter, cooler showers.
Avoid using the microwave.
Reduce your reliance on dry cleaners or find an organic one.
Wear latex or rubber gloves when cleaning with household chemicals.
Avoid artificial fragrances such as those in candles and air fresheners.
Do not use stain-proof carpets, as the VOC’s will be released into the air that you breathe.
Use VOC-free paint in your home.
IN YOUR YARD
Instead of using pesticides, try using diluted garlic or a mild soap solution.
The following are either plants or the natural substances contained in them. Usually it is best to consume the whole plant, due to the synergies between many natural chemicals that are present in the whole plant. In some cases it is advantageous to use an isolated vitamin or mineral. Please consult with your doctor on the pros and cons of either method.

What follows is an alphabetica list of natural medicine, but I’ve pulled Tuleina to the top (and even given it a separate page) because of its special importance. Tuleina is not a plant or even a recipe of plants, but rather an entire system of natural medicine developed and passed down for thousands of years within the Kuna Tribe, which currently reside in both Panama’s San Blas Islands and in the jungle of Colombia. The Kuna Tribe are known to be without cancer or heart disease, mainly due to Tuleina, which includes a handful of herbs a dn fruits that you already know (such as cacao and basil), plus an unlimited number of plants that no one outside their tribe has ever heard of. I have therefore decided to create a separate page dedicated to the powerful system of healing and life preservation known as Tuleina.
Acacia caven
The leaves of this herb are healing and the seeds are used as a digestive. The leaves and stems of this herb have antiphlogistic (anti-inflammatory, fever-reducing) and soothing properties. Essential oils can be extracted from the flowers.
Annatto – Bixa Orellana
The tocotrienols from annatto are currently being studied and they are thought to prevent cancer due to their anti-angiogenic effect. It is also used for the treatment of infections of microbial origin. It is combined with honey and milk of magnesia for the treatment of sore lips.
Annatto is a rich source of tocotrienols, antioxidants that are similar in structure and function to vitamin E. Achiote dye is used as the acid antidote for cassava poison. The leaves, prepared in infusion, are also an excellent remedy to relieve prostatitis.
Aji – Capsicum annuum
The fruit is used to flavor food. Aji is used as a stimulant, digestive, appetizer, nerve tonic, laxative, disinfectant, rubefacient, carminative, antibacterial and ant-irritant. An anti-inflammatory, it may be used to treat burns. For disorders of the digestive and respiratory systems. Moderate anti-fungal activity. The leaves are used as an expectorant, against bronchitis, bleeding, burns and constipation. Seeds are used for certain heart conditions such as carditis, endocarditis, and pericarditis. To ease the sting of pepper, chew the leaf of the same plant and discard.
Aloe Vera – Savila
Aloe is excellent for healing wounds and dryness of the skin and hair. It has antibiotic, antiseptic and laxative properties. It helps the skin, the stomach, the kidneys and other organs. It is an excellent source of protein. Aloin is the yellow oil that is its most potent part of the plant. Those sensitive to this oil should remove the green skin, utilizing only the clear jelly-like substance both internally and externally.
Andrographis – “king of the bitters”
Antiviral, antibacterial, cooling, anti-inflammatory, protects the liver.
Apple – Malus domestica
Regulates the bowel, good tonic for the heart and circulation, improves digestion, laxative, high-fiber skin, Astringent, if the peel.
Alsauco – Sambucus nigra
It is one of the best sudorific (promotes sweating) is blood purifier. Presents diuretic properties to flush out toxins and reduce inflammation. As a tea to treat colds, flu, colds, catarrh and as a preventative measure for these conditions.
Anamú – Petiveria alliacea
Used as antispasmic, diuretic, stimulant, sudorific and to alleviate menstrual problems. Also in arthritis, malaria, rheumatism, memory problems, as a local analgesic and anti-inflammatory with various skin conditions.
Ashwagandha – indian genseng
Promotes metabolic efficiency. In ayurveda it is used to promote mental and physical vitality and stamina.
Avocado – Persea Americana
Baking Soda – Sodium bicarbonate
It can be useful to consume pure sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) dissolved in water, to alkalize the body (including the blood, the urine and the tissues). A similar product called bicarbonate may be better for those wishing to avoid sodium. A half teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a glass of pure water can be consumed every 2-4 hours. The baking soda will quickly change the ph of the stomach, which can help or cure conditions such as stomach ulcers and urinary tract infections. Baking soda has also been used to treat or cure cancer (see this video by Dr. Tullio Simoncini) and for eliminating kidney stones. Since acidic blood causes the bones to donate calcium and magnesium in an attempt to normalize the blood’s pH, alkalizing the blood with baking soda will allow your bones to keep their needed minerals, effectively halting osteoporosis and some cases of arthritis.
Basil – Ocimum basilicum
Used for chronic stomach disorders and constipation. In you, for the nerves. In food, baths, and rubs. According to Tuleina (the natural medicine of the kuna tribe) basil is medicine for daily use for everyone. Some of its benefits can be achieved incredible just smelling its delicious fragrance.
Basil contains the highest level of iron of all foods. The following graph shows that basil contains 35 times more iron than red meat.
Balsam apple – Momordica charantica
A climbing vine herb that produces showy fruits looking like a lemon. In tea: for diabetes. The cooked leaves are used to reduce blood sugar. In baths: for allergies. The Indians used the cooked fruit to cure bronchitis. But the seeds are very poisonous alkaloid containing momordicina, which some South American tribes used to poison their arrows. The choco know the abortifacient effects of their roots.
It is also used to increase urine production and elimination of waste substances, develops an interesting anti-inflammatory action on the urinary organs recommended in case of nephritis, kidney stones and inflammation of the bladder (cystitis). Increases when menstruation is scarce.
Contains a bittersweet juice that is refreshing and effective for cleaning the liver, and reducing intestinal inflammation. A cup is slightly purgative. Highly decongestant. A decoction of the stem has hipoglucemianes properties, stabilizing blood sugar for several days after consumption.
Bracken fern – Pteridium aquilinum
It is considered useful to reduce heavy menstrual periods. In other areas such as Andalusia this plant has been used on occasion as antidiarrheal and vermifuge.
Cacao – Cacaotero Theobroma
The seeds, leaves and roots contain alkaloids theobromine and caffeine which has diuretic and vasodilator. Antitumor activity was found in the root and bark. The seeds contain fat (cocoa butter) are used in pharmacy as an emollient and for making ointments and creams. Dry skin, burns, dandruff, dysentery, measles, snakebite. Diuretic effect of theobromine is accompanied by an inflammatory action on the kidney have therefore recommended in cases of nephrosis and nephritis. Overall, cocoa is slightly tonic and stimulant, although in large doses or in sensitive individuals, can cause insomnia and tachycardia.

Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica
Cannabis is an herb that may also be considered a vegetable when its leaves and flowers are eaten in salads or juiced along with other essential nutrients. Its active ingredients, cannabinoids, may be concentrated into capsules and are prescribed by doctors and dispensed by pharmacists as medicine for cancer, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, glaucoma, chronic pain, insomnia, anorexia and many more diseases. (Many argue that the commercially-produced concentrations of THC, the main active ingredient in cannabis, is not nearly as effective, most probably due to the absence of dozens of other cannabinoids present in the whole plant. These substances seem to work together synergistically.
The non-medicinal cousin of cannabis (hemp) also serves as food, good source of omega-3 lipids and amino acids.Cannabis has been outlawed as an illegal recreational drug in some countries during the last century. Do not use any prohibited substance. Go through proper legal channels instead. Many jurisdictions permit the use of cannabis for health purposes. If yours does not, inform your lawmakers about the unequalled nutritious and medicinal properties of cannabis.
Carotenoids
Carotenoids are antioxidants that include vitamin A, lycopene, and beta-carotene. They help protect your eyes and skin from sun damage. Best food sources: carrots, butternut squash, and spinach. DV: 2,310IU for vitamin A.
